As the weather outside is frightful, there are many days where leaving our homes become difficult and challenging. Don’t worry — there are many things you can do indoors to beat the winter blues.
• Civil War Museum. The Civil War Museum focused on the contributions of the Upper Midwest to the Civil War. Learn about how Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, Minnesota and Michigan played a vital role by providing troops and supplies. Walk through the exhibit and hear the personal stories from people of all walks of life during and after the war. Enjoy the gift shop and free programs for adults and families. There are also classes and workshops offered.
• Dinosaur Discovery Museum. The Dinosaur Discovery Museum focuses exclusively on the link between modern birds and meat-eating dinosaurs. Learn about these dinosaurs — what they looked like, what they ate and how they behaved. The Museum also offers the opportunity for hands-on learning in the Kids Discovery Lab. Stocked with coloring sheets, dinosaur rubbings and dino-digs, there is fun for the whole family!
• Durkee Mansion. The Durkee Mansion was home to Charles Durkee, Wisconsin’s Civic War era Senator, who was influential pioneer, businessman, politician and patron of the arts. After he passed away, his mansion became housing for students of an all girls schools. Learn about his history, visit the antique collection and go on a tour.
• Kemper Center. The Kemper Center overlooks Lake Michigan and is situated on a 17.5-acre Kenosha County Park, featuring Durkee Mansion, Anderson Arts Center, Griffin Observatory and a chapel. The mission of the Kemper Center is to preserve the historic nature of the buildings attached, and promote programs that include local history and arts.
• Kenosha History Center. The Kenosha History Center features the history of Kenosha County, including its early settlement and industrial history. Learn about the settlement to the 19th century and see the Upson Oxcart, a Barn Raising & Fanning Mill, Blacksmith Shop, Railroad Depot, General Store, Barbershop, One-Room School and more.
• Kenosha Public Library. A great way to spend a Saturday afternoon is at the Kenosha Public Library! Get involved in a group activity, or enjoy a good book by yourself.
• Kenosha Public Museum. The Kenosha Public Museum is a natural science and fine arts, featuring world cultures, zoology, geology, fossils and fine and decorative arts. There are also family programs, classes and workshops.
• Wilmot Mountain. Wilmot Mountain offers skiing, snowboarding and snow tubing and is the perfect winter get-a-way. With over 1,000 feet of multiple tubing lanes and a conveyor lift, there’s lots of room for family fun.
