Shorewest Shares: DIY Backyard Obstacle Course

Create the ultimate backyard obstacle course for your children and throw the ultimate summer hang out. These eight obstacles will provide the most fun:

1. Ladder Run. Lay a wooden ladder flat on the ground for obstacle runners to hop through the rungs.
2. Balloon Table Crawl. Blow up (or use a hand pump) to fill 100 balloons to cover a small table. Tie yarn or string to each balloon and secure to the table. Obstacle runners need to crawl as fast as they can through the balloon table.
3. Rope Swing. Set up a rope swing over an inflatable wading pool. If you clear the pool, you can continue on the course!
4. Balance Beam. Lay an eight-foot-long beam on the grass, or raise it with 12-inch blocks. Obstacle runners can continue if they make it all the way across without falling.
5. Newspaper Walk. Hand your obstacle course runners three sheets of newspaper. Every time they need to take a step, they have to put down the newspaper — which can get tricky!
6. Wagon Slalom. Stand pool noodles in gallon buckets (filled with sand) and set up in a zigzag pattern. Fill a small wagon with water balloons. Obstacle runners have to pull the wagon in-between the noodles without spilling any balloons.
7. Hoop Alley. Lay out 8-10 hula hoops in a straight line. Runners have to step into each hoop, lift it overhead and drop behind as they move forward.
8. Crabwalk. Have runners sit on the grass, bend their knees, lock their elbows and “walk” straight and as fast as they can.
