Community Spotlight: How to Give Back this Thanksgiving Holiday

Thanksgiving is one week away! As most of us are starting to get ready to travel and spend time with our families, we often times forget about the people who don’t celebrate Thanksgiving the same way we do. Volunteering and helping others celebrate Thanksgiving can be just as rewarding to your family as well. Here are ways that we can give back this Holiday Season:

  • Volunteer at a Soup Kitchen. Soup Kitchens need volunteers to collect food, set up service areas, help seat people, make deliveries, cook and many more tasks. You can search for local soup kitchens in your area to volunteer, even if it’s only for a couple hours.
  • Serve Thanksgiving Dinner at a Homeless Shelter. Homeless shelters also need volunteers to help prepare and serve meals for those without a home.
  • Deliver meals to people in need. Meals on Wheels™ programs help deliver food to people in need.
  • Be a part of a fundraiser. Your local area Food Pantry can benefit from your help fundraising.
  • Run a Turkey Trot. Turkey Trot are races that often benefit local charities and are planned around Thanksgiving.
  • Volunteer at a Salvation Army. The Salvation Army is very busy with the holiday season and can benefit from your help.
  • Volunteer at a nursing/assisted living home. The elderly may be lonely around the holidays, especially if they don’t have family near-by. You can volunteer and help from decorating, to serving the Thanksgiving meal.
  • Invite others to join your family for your Thanksgiving Meal. If you know of a neighbor or friend from work that will be celebrating Thanksgiving alone, invite them to join your family.
  • Take dishes to public service people. For those who work in a police and fire department, Thanksgiving is another working day. Take a few dishes to the local fire station or police department for the people on duty.

As Thanksgiving is a time we celebrate everything we’re thankful for, it can also be a time to volunteer and give back. Please consider volunteering this Thanksgiving and giving back to your community.
